Now, let’s learn some facts about the helmet. What is the use of helmet in the real astronaut costume? Why astronaut must wear a special helmet when he/she travels in space?

Astronauts do not normally wear helmet unless they are going outside the spacecraft. They need the helmet to breathe because there is no air outside. The helmet helps maintain the oxygen at the appropriate pressure around the head. The main material used to make this helmet is clear plastic bubble. The bubble is layered by Extravehicular Visor Assembly. A layer of gold is used to coat it so that it can filter out the harmful rays from the Sun. The visor can protect the astronaut from small objects potentially hitting them and from extreme temperatures. They usually attach a camera and lights to the helmet.

Share with your kids some functions of the backpack that astronaut wears in the outer space. Here are some of them:

Space suits cannot use normal air, because, much like what will happen in climbing Mount Everest, low pressure would cause low oxygen concentrations in the astronauts’ circulatory system. The space suits give out oxygen for astronaut to breathe. The suits obtain the oxygen from a spacecraft through an special umbilical cord. When the astronaut is outside the spacecraft, they get the oxygen from the life-support system inside the backpack  that he or she wears.

astronauts backpackAstronauts breathe out the carbon dioxide. Space suits use a kind of canisters to remove carbon dioxide. The canisters are located in the backpack and they can also be found in the spacecraft. Inside the spacecraft, umbilical cord is used to access the canisters.

Inside the suit of an astronaut, there is a set of communications wires and bioinstruments. It provides connection to the radio and bioinstruments in the backpack that is worn by the astronaut. Its function is for communication and monitoring the astronaut’s temperature, respiration and heart rate and other vital signs.

Nasa has also developed a nitrogen-gas propelled unit called SAFER that fits on the backpack. This can help an astronaut to maneuver to return to the shuttle if he or she is separated from the shuttle.
